-Bharathiyar
Discaimer :
I am not a literary guy. So the above might be incomplete lyrics of the song. This just from my memory. If some one can correct me I will be more than happy ! Further, the context, the translation etc are purely my interpretation. Other POVs are most welcome ( and anticipated )
Context :
Bharathiyar is one of the most respected and popular modern Tamil Poet. His range is from Patriotic to Romantic to pious. He is an extremist - in his thoughts and words! Passionate, eccentric. Literary depth of his poems are so deep that some of them are a part of Preschool Rhymes and some of them are still being debated in literary circles as to what they mean !!! In fact the very Preschool rhymes are still discussed in literary circles as to what they actually mean : the symbols and semantics.
A prominent theme in his poems is Lord Krishna. He addressess Krishna in three different ways.
Kannan : Lord Krisha : whom he prays to, plays with, rags ..
Kannamma : Lord Krishna as a girl : whom he prays to, flirts with, loves, teases ..
Kanna : Bala Krishna, the kid : whom he prays to, plays with, enjoys his pranks ...
The above song belongs to the Kannamma theme where he prays to her and sings about the greatness of surrendering to "her"
Translation:
ninnai charaNadainthEn, kaNNammA

I surrender to thee, Kannamma

That's a pretty neat translation but te book I have has some more lines. With your permission I'll give those here -
Thanseyyal enni thavipathu Theernthingu
Nnseyyal seydu niraivu perumvannam
This cones before Thunpamillai..... And at the end these two lines occur.
Nallathu Thiyathu namariayom, annai
nallathu nattuga,Thimayai Otuga
Do you think kannama id kannan?? To me she is his love, mother, friend, godess - all tat an emotional and passionate being like Bharathi would look for in a women. Thanks for this post . Enjoyed opening up Bharathi's poems again.

ROFL - yea... "A genius ! Passionate genius positve romantic creative soul" means eccentricity I guess...but yea.. given his mind I am sure he didn't live "normal accepted standard" life and oh yea... he is one hellava passionate guy :) Got to read on him...have seen movies only :)
Thats cool, you should put it here... hope you got it with you :))
Will check those places.
Yep he does :)
Cool :)

Eccentricity, fortunately, did not come into play in his literary endeavors ! But he was eccentric - at least thats what I have come to beleive from whatever I have read of him. I actually worte this long ago to create a colelction of self made translations of his popular work ! Including "Kuil" Paattu .. but didnt go beyond this !
I dont know a place online where the songs and translations are available - there were a few - but they were very selective. There is site run by Tamil University which is into digitising all Tamil literary work. Google it. I have forgotten the URLs. Books, though, are the best in these scenarios !
Bharathi rocks !
Sophiz - absolutely - English doesnt do justice. For that matter any translation from any language to any language doesnt do justice to the original ! But i think these help in creating a curiosity !
